Uraidla win epic 22/23 Division 2 final
In a tightly contested Traditional Division 2 Grand Final at Anembo Park, Uraidla defeated Crafers by just two games in a fluctuating affair.
Crafers pairing Anzac and Nick Leidig completely dominated the top doubles to easily defeat Ryan Gore/Shane Virgo 6-2, 6-1.
Uraidla’s Adam Gore/Jake Christiansen countered with a 6-2, 6-1 result over Graham Goldsmith/Lynton Manuel.
The battle was on an even keel heading into the singles, and Goldsmith played a workman-like set to overcome Christiansen 9-4.
Virgo again balanced for Uraidla, proving far too consistent for Jamie Yates to win 9-2.
Uraidla led by two games into the closing two singles, where N. Leidig just got over the top of A. Gore 9-8, in a classic battle decided in the tie-breaker.
A. Leidig appeared to be in control on the adjacent court against R. Gore, leading 8-6 and playing the more consistent tennis.
However, Gore found a way to hold his serve with some solid attacking tennis, to trail 8-7. Leidig then lead 40-15 on serve but just couldn’t find a way to play a winning shot to clinch the championship.
Gore scrambled back to deuce and then saved a further eight match points before finally winning the game to tie at eight games all.
Gore found that bit extra and produced a superb tie-breaker to edge out Leidig 9-8 in a brilliant set, giving Uraidla a thrilling premiership triumph.
Final score: Uraidla 3–4–45 defeated Crafers 3–4–43
